Secondary Level
Seasoned: Ages 12-14 (grades 6-8)
Each class at the secondary level is 34 weeks long and meets twice a week. Each class is one hour long.
Ethics classes for secondary students focus on the development of critical thinking, respectful discussion and reasoning, and the ability to make balanced decisions about ethical issues. The secondary level curriculum will provide a continuum of learning for students and is currently under development.
Contemporary issues, case studies and scenarios form the basis of thinking and discussions on ethical issues such as: lying and can it be justified by the wider good, changing your mind, is cloning for research ethical, how we can work out what’s true, friendship, patriotism, whether we have obligations to other generations, envy, and the role empathy plays in ethical decision-making.
Skills-based topics include: arguments and reasons, validity, argument analysis and evaluation, deductive validity and inductive strength, thinking about thinking.
Secondary school students will develop their community of inquiry skills through formulating well thought-out arguments and questions, actively listening to one another and respectfully challenging the arguments of others.
